'Enormous wastage': Graeme Souness says Chelsea have a player who will never reach his potential

Chelsea's work in the transfer window in recent years hasn't been all that impressive.

Aside from the genius signing of Cole Palmer, Chelsea have got a lot wrong in the transfer window.

Signing Palmer for £40m was a brilliant deal, but, sadly, not every big-name signing has worked out at Stamford Bridge.

The likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Romelu Lukaku all left the club soon after joining, while Mykhaylo Mudryk hasn't proven to be worth the money.

Enzo Fernandez remains the second-most expensive player in Premier League history, and, at the moment, he can't even get into the Chelsea team.

Speaking on the Up Front Podcast, Graeme Souness has been discussing Fernandez and his struggles at Chelsea, and he says that the Argentine will never reach his supposed potential.

Enzo Fernandez will not reach his potential

Souness shared his verdict on the Chelsea midfielder.

The pundit says that Fernandez will never be as good as Chelsea thought he would be, and that the Blues will ultimately waste a lot of money on the Argentine.

"I think with the current group of players, Chelsea, they have a chance to get into the top four. And I still think they’re a good bit off of winning either the Premier League or the Champions League without a group of players. I think it will be an enormous wastage in the current group of players."

"I think a lot of them will never come up to the levels they think they’ll come up to. And the most obvious one at this moment in time is not in the team, Enzo Fernandez.

"£115m. So they’ve bought a lot of players that won’t come up to the level they would have hoped.

"And my point with Chelsea was, is that there would have been a different way of doing it. I think they went out and it was a scatter gun approach just by everyone and anyone of a certain age that came up. Another thing I said, they’re just storing problems up from further down, from themselves further down the line."

Enzo Fernandez is the second-most expensive player this country has ever seen, but he's not necessarily a standout terrible signing.

Yes, he hasn't lived up to his massive price tag, but the reality is that most players who move for big money don't.

Of the top 10 most expensive players in Premier League history, there aren't many who you could call a rousing success.

Declan Rice is perhaps the best of the bunch, and even then, Rice hasn't been great for Arsenal this season.

Unfortunately, Fernandez has been judged largely on his price tag, and because everyone expects the world from a £115m player, he's criticised whenever he doesn't perform.

Fernandez is a very talented footballer, and he has had his moments for Chelsea, but he will never receive any sort of credit for his showings due to how much he cost.
