Ex-PGMOL chief: Matete must face retrospective action over Bolton v Charlton outrage
Today at 11:57 AM
Jay Matete should face retrospective action after the Bolton Wanderers man stamped on an opponent during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic, according to Keith Hackett.
The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the midfielder could still receive further punishment from the FA over the incident.
The Trotters were beaten 2-1 at home by Nathan Jones’ side on Tuesday (21 January), a result that led to the sacking of Ian Evatt as manager.
Things though could have been even worse for Bolton, had Matete received what Hackett feels would have been the appropriate punishment for one rash moment late on in the game.
Bolton man lucky not to see red in defeat to Charlton
With 82 minutes on the clock and the game locked at 1-1, Matete – who is currently on loan from Sunderland – was introduced into the game by Evatt.
Moments later though Bolton conceded to go 2-1 down, which set up the incident involving the midfielder.
As the home side searched for a way back into the game, Jones’ side attempted to run the clock down by keeping the ball in the corner.
Matete was one of several players applying the pressure on a Charlton man as he did so, and as his opponent went to ground, the 23-year-old was seen stamping on the back of his leg.
Referee Jacob Miles then booked the Bolton midfielder, although Hackett is keen to see him receive further punishment retrospectively from the FA.
Speaking to Football Insider about the incident, the former referee said:
“There is no place in football for the action of Metete who frankly should have received a red card for his stamping action on his opponent.
“Unacceptable and I would really like the authorities to review this incident and upgrade to a red.
“The referee having taken action might be the end of the matter. The referee may well be asked for his observations on what he saw. If there is a gap then the FA may charge the player”.
That defeat means Bolton are ninth in the League One table, three points adrift of the play-offs as they search for a new manager.
Charlton meanwhile are now just one point and one position behind the Trotters following this win.
In other news, three Championship clubs are keen to sign a Celtic player.
