Ally McCoist remains convinced over Derek McInnes’ capability if named Rangers manager despite struggling at Kilmarnock this season.

The 53-year-old has regularly been linked with a switch to Ibrox, none more so than when Philippe Clement was under tremendous pressure as the Rangers boss up until last month.

Barry Ferguson has now taken up the position of head coach until the end of the season, though the former player is already under pressure at Ibrox as the Gers struggle on the pitch.

It has already been suggested that Ferguson may not make it until the summer at Rangers, with the rumour mill in full flow of who could be the next figure to work alongside Nils Koppen.

McCoist already told Football Insider that Rafa Benitez would be interested in Ibrox, though his eyes seem to be primarily set on Premier League football again after leaving Everton in 2022.

Rangers already searching for Barry Ferguson successor

With a dramatic comeback 4-2 win over Kilmarnock, followed by a 2-1 defeat to Motherwell, questions are already being asked of the interim manager, suggesting the search for a new permanent manager needs to be found.

While the Killie are struggling in the Scottish Premiership this season, sitting 10th in the table after 29 matches, McCoist believes McInnes history speaks for itself in Scotland.

Kilmarnock finished fourth in the Scottish Premiership last season and remained in that position in the Championship Group, showing exactly what a team is capable of under McInnes’ leadership.

Derek McInnes could be the answer to Ibrox issues

Football Insider revealed in January that McInnes and Russell Martin are on Rangers' shortlist, with Steve Cooper and Kevin Muscat also involved, though no decision has been made yet.

With a summer of change ahead, especially with the 49ers Enterprises attempting to complete a Rangers takeover, finding a new manager will be key over the next few weeks, and that manager might already be under their noses.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, via talkSPORT BET, McCoist said:

"Derek McInnes of Kilmarnock, his name has been put forward. He isn't having as good a season this time around as he did last season, but I do think Derek is more than capable of doing the job, knowing the club and knowing the league."
