Manchester United’s search for a new manager will not be limited to those out of work and they are ready to pay for the right man to bring him to Old Trafford, TBR Football understands.

Ten Hag’s reign at United was brought to an end on Monday, just over two-years after his arrival from Dutch giants Ajax.

Ten Hag leaves United in 14th place and six points off the Champions League places, which we understand is a crucial factor in the change coming. United have never failed to qualify for Europe’s top competition two-years in succession and that is firmly on the cards this season as it stands.

United willing to pay for new boss as Frank and Nagelsmann linked

We revealed that talks have been ongoing with potential Ten Hag replacements in the last few weeks, and United have also been offered numerous different options.

TBR Football understands that United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has underlined that the club will pay for a new manager, if required, so approaching an in-work candidate is not an issue to them.

Two managers in-work that of interest are understood to be Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, having also been looking at closely in the summer prior to them handing ten Hag a new contract.

Newcastle’s Eddie Howe and Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi are others linked in recent weeks, who would also in theory cost money if they were identified as the one to come in.

Former Barcelona boss Xavi, ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter and Gareth Southgate – who left England in the summer, have all been mentioned as candidates to come in.

Ten Hag no 2 Ruud van Nistelrooy handed interim Red Devils role

TBR Football exclusively revealed on Monday morning that Ten Hag was on the brink of leaving and United brought down the axe on his tenure soon after.

United confirmed in a statement: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men's first-team manager.

“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

Van Nistelrooy appointment is only on an interim basis and TBR Football understands that he is not in contention at this stage to be the long-term appointment.
