Exclusive: St Johnstone decide to offload trio this month
Today at 10:07 AM
St Johnstone are looking to offload Matt Smith, Josh McPake, Cammy MacPherson before the close of the transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
Midfield duo Smith and MacPherson and winger McPake were all omitted from the match-day squad for Saturday's Scottish Cup win over Motherwell and have been told to find new clubs this window.
St Johnstone wants to add two new players to the squad on top of those deals they've already done, and they need to make room in their squad with some departures.
This trio have been deemed surplus to requirements moving forward, with Simo Valakari deciding they're not needed moving forward.
The 20-year-old has spent time north of the border training with the Scottish Premiership side as QPR makes a decision on his future.
St Johnstone are ready to trim their squad
Smith is out of contract at St Johnstone at the end of this season, but the club have decided to try and cash in on him ahead of that.
MacPherson is in the same situation, and has only featured 12 times in all competitions this season for the Scottish side.
Ex-Rangers star McPake's deal doesn't expire until 2026, but he has only played 95 minutes of Scottish Premiership football across seven appearances this season.
The Saints are currently bottom of the Scottish Premiership after 24 games and are very much involved in a relegation battle this season.
Valakari's side trails Hearts by nine points, with new signings being seen as a necessary way of bolstering the squad.
