Man United and Liverpool have both held an initial interest in signing Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremy Frimpong, according to their former chief scout.
Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that both sides will look to sign a new right-back this summer.
However, neither are considered likely to make a move for the 24-year-old and will instead set their sights on alternative targets.
Frimpong’s perceived lack of defensive stability and structure have caused both clubs to look elsewhere amid concerns about whether his talents would translate to the English game.
Liverpool’s plans have come as a result of uncertainty surrounding their right-back position, as Brown told Football Insider that Trent Alexander-Arnold is likely to join Real Madrid.
The 26-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and little progress has been made towards agreeing a deal amid plenty of speculation.
Man United, meanwhile, have identified a new right-wing-back as one of their key targets amid concerns about the future of Diogo Dalot.
Jeremie Frimpong unlikely to join Liverpool or Man United
Brown told Football Insider in December that Man City have also been looking at Frimpong, who graduated from their academy, to replace Kyle Walker.
Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and also spent time working for the likes of Tottenham, West Ham and Aston Villa, insisted that both Liverpool and Man United are likely to look elsewhere.
“Liverpool are looking to sign a new right-back,” he told Football Insider.
“But I don’t think Fimpong will be they player they bring in.
“If Liverpool are sticking with a back four, I don’t see where he fits.
“He’s a very, very attack-minded wing-back, but there are questions about him defensively.
“I’m not sure how well that would work at right-back in the Premier League, and I’m sure that’s something these clubs are also taking into account.
“He had an impressive season when they won the league, but I don’t think he’s anything special.
“I’m not convinced Man United will be too keen on him either.
“I know they’ve looked at him and he’s a name on a list, but only in that he’s a right-wing-back playing in Europe, so it would be strange if they hadn’t looked at him.
“I’d be surprised if he was their first choice, we’ll put it that way.”
Ruben Amorim eyes new striker deal after Harry Kane latest
Amid seemingly constant links to new players across the pitch, Man United are mainly focused on improving their attacking options this summer.
Concerns about the performances of Rasmus Hojlund in particular have raised red flags, and a number of new forwards are being considered.
Brown told Football Insider on 11 March that Man United want to sign Harry Kane amid talk about a move for Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta.
Meanwhile, Viktor Gyokeres remains a target for Man United amid speculation he could be set to leave Sporting CP come the end of the season.
