Expert predicts Liverpool stance on Julian Alvarez transfer - 'huge' verdict

03/22/2025 04:00 PM
Liverpool have been keeping tabs on the availability of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez ahead of the summer transfer window.
That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that they are unlikely to pursue a deal for the 25-year-old.
Alvarez is thought to be settled and happy in Madrid and is not looking to leave the club this summer, just 12 months after his “surprise” move from Man City.
As a result, Arne Slot’s side are set to turn their attention to alternate targets as they plan to strengthen their attacking options when the window opens.
This comes after Brown told Football Insider that Liverpool want to sign a world-class forward this summer and could cash in on their current stars to make room.
Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota have all been linked with moves away from Anfield this summer as a result of growing frustrations behind the scenes.
Liverpool unlikely to pursue Julian Alvarez deal this summer
Football Insider exclusively revealed on 19 March that Liverpool are unlikely to sign Alvarez this summer as they are not prepared to meet his asking price.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that any agreement for Alvarez to leave this summer would have to be a “huge” deal.
“Julian Alvarez is a top player, an undoubted talent,” he told Football Insider.
“I can think of a few teams who would like a player like him in their side.
“I was surprised he left Man City – did they think he didn’t quite fit the bill and they preferred somebody like Marmoush who has now come in?
“Or was it a decision on his side because he wasn’t getting in the team ahead of Haaland?
“Either way, he’s a quality player and he’s been able to show that since moving to Atletico.
“I’ve heard talk about a potential move to Liverpool, but just a year after he left City I’m not convinced that one’s likely to happen.
“I think he’s one they’ve looked at to see whether he might be an option, but it’s not gone any further.
“He’s settled and happy where he is at the moment, I don’t think he’s looking to move.
“Plus, Atletico Madrid are not going to want to sell, it would have to be a huge deal.
“Liverpool do want to strengthen up front, but they’ll have to look elsewhere.”
Arne Slot gives green light to Diogo Jota sale
Liverpool’s pursuit of a new striker comes amid questions about their attacking options as Slot is said to have grown frustrated with their inconsistent performances.
Mohamed Salah has provided the majority of goals for the Reds this season, but speculation about his future has lingered after a lack of progress in contract talks.
Now, Brown has told Football Insider that Liverpool will accept offers for Diogo Jota as they prepare for a potential attacking reshuffle at Anfield.
Jota, 28, has scored just five Premier League goals in 18 appearances so far this season and there is a growing feeling he could be sold to make way for a new signing.
