Football fans are demanding Mikel Arteta receives a strong punishment after the Arsenal manager escaped with a yellow card during last night’s Champions League defeat against Inter.
The Gunners’ miserable run of form continued at San Siro where Hakan Calhanoglu’s controversial penalty, awarded for a handball by Mikel Merino, proved decisive.
Arsenal dominated the second period but were unable to find the equaliser that would have secured a creditable draw and preserved their unbeaten start to the competition.
Despite enjoying the overwhelming majority of possession in the second 45 minutes, Arsenal failed to create any clear-cut goalscoring opportunities much to the frustration of their increasingly agitated manager.
Arteta let his frustrations and overexuberance get the better of him shortly after the hour mark when he left his technical area to retrieve the ball in an attempt to help his side take a quick throw-in.
Unfortunately, the ball hadn’t fully gone out of play much to the annoyance of Inter full-back Matteo Darmian.
Arteta was cautioned by the referee and it’s far from the first time the Spaniard’s touchline conduct has landed him in hot water and fans believe it is time officials clamped down on his behaviour.
‘Absolutely a red card,’ said one fan on X. ‘One of my most dad takes is that Arteta should be reprimanded for touchline stuff way more harshly.
‘Why is he outside his box again, going onto the pitch to get a touch of the ball?’ said another disgruntled fan, ‘Cheat.’
‘They need to put one of those shock collars on him,’ said another fan who suggested an unconventional solution. ‘If he ventures outside the technical area.’
And another fan believed Arteta got off lightly, saying ‘Genuinely, how's that's only a booking? A manager entering the field of play and picking up the ball surely has to be a red card.’
Arteta, meanwhile, will hope his team can bounce back and reverse a poor run of form with a positive result against Chelsea on Sunday.
‘If we play the way we play, we'll have a big chance to win against Chelsea,’ he said.’That's the way we have to go. I told them that I'm proud of them.
‘I haven't seen them play in Europe in the manner that we have today. We are disappointed because we didn't get what we wanted out of the game, that's for sure.’
