West Ham United have been busy on the transfer front in recent weeks and it looks as though they're just getting started.

Brazilian midfielder Luis Guilherme has joined the Hammers from Palmeiras, while veteran goalkeeper Wes Foderingham has arrived at the London Stadium on a free transfer.

Now, West Ham are reportedly closing in on their third signing of the summer, and he’s a player that the Hammers really need.

The Hammers appear to have been prioritising a new centre-back, with Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Max Kilman a name that has been doing the rounds.

Fabrizio Romano says Max Kilman set to sign West Ham contract

Over the past 24 hours or so, West Ham have made significant progress in pursuit of the 27-year-old, with Fabrizio Romanodeclaring “here we go” on the deal on Thursday evening.

Now, Romano has provided a new update on Kilman to West Ham, saying the defender is now set to sign his Hammers contract, with formal steps to follow.

West Ham set to sign ‘fantastic’ defender in Kilman

West Ham endured a difficult 2023/24 season in which they failed to qualify for Europe and conceded far too many goals.

The Hammers shipped 74 goals in the Premier League last campaign, more than any other team in the top half of the table.

With that in mind, Kilman is just what West Ham need to strengthen their shaky back line.

The 27-year-old is superb with the ball at his feet, a great defender, proven in the Premier League and has superb leadership skills.

Conor Coady told the Wolves website in 2020: "Max has been with us for years, he trains with us every single day, he knows the role inside out, he's a fantastic lad and a brilliant professional as well.

"He's brilliant to have around and is a brilliant professional – he listens to the manager, he learns off the lads who've been playing there the last couple of years and I think you could see that today."

West Ham are set to pay £40million for Kilman, which is a fairly modest fee for such a great defender in his prime.
