West Ham are plotting a move to sign Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell after the latest news on his future at Stamford Bridge, according to the club’s former scout.

Mick Brown, who worked as a senior scout at the London Stadium until leaving alongside David Moyes in June and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the Hammers are in the market for a new left-back this month.

This comes after Enzo Maresca confirmed he still expects Chilwell, 28, to leave the club this month despite high praise for his attitude and work ethic.

The former England international has made just one appearance for the Blues this season and does not feature in the manager’s plans for the future.

However, there is not expected to be a shortage of clubs monitoring his situation, with West Ham among the leading contenders.

It has been suggested that a reunion with Graham Potter could be on the cards, with the new Hammers boss keen to strengthen his options after taking over from Julen Lopetegui.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised at the London Stadium about Emerson Palmieri’s performances, with a growing feeling that he could be replaced.

West Ham backed to land Ben Chilwell transfer this month

Brown told Football Insider in November that a new left-back is high on the Hammers’ list of priorities, and a list of potential options had already been drafted.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted that a move to bring Chilwell to East London would make sense for all parties.

I’m surprised he’s been frozen out at Chelsea,” he told Football Insider.

“I think he’s a very good player, and was probably in the top three English left-backs if not the best in the country at one stage.

“Whether the injury issues he’s had have had a bigger impact than they expected, I’m not sure.

“I don’t like to see talented players sidelined, so I expect he’ll get a move in the window.

“They’ve got Emerson in there but there have been a few questions about his performances, plus, Potter already knows Chilwell from his time at Chelsea.

“He already lives in London, too, so I think that move would make a lot of sense for all parties.”
