'He's improved so much': Pundit says Fulham have a player who would easily get into the England team now
Today at 11:45 AM
It's been a long time since Fulham had an England international in their squad.
Since Bobby Zamora's two caps in the early 2010s, Fulham haven't had a single England international.
Marcus Bettinelli was called up back in 2018, but he was never capped.
However, that could have been very different.
Indeed, Antonee Robinson has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season, and if he'd declared for England instead of the USA, perhaps he would be a Three Lions regular at this point.
Speaking on Call it What You Want, former USA international, Tony Meola has been discussing Robinson's current ability and whether he'd get into the England team now.
The pundit says that Robinson would definitely be in the England squad right now, going as far as to claim that he's one of the world's top 10 left-backs.
Antonee Robinson is good enough for England
Meola made the case for the Fulham star getting into the England side.
This comes after Robinson was linked with a move to Liverpool recently.
"Do you think he could walk into England's team?" The host asked.
"Yeah I think he could play there yeah, there's no doubt about it. Look how he's playing in the Premier League. We hear rumours about him everywhere. Thankfully he's with us, but they would love to have a player like him getting up and down the left side," Meola said.
"He's improved so much over the last couple of years. There's no doubt, I saw a discussion of if he's a top 10 left-back in the world, and you can certainly make an argument about that, there's no doubt about that."
Was Antonee Robinson eligible for England?
This conversation is all well and good, but was Robinson ever actually eligible to play for England?
Robinson was in fact eligible to play for the Three Lions at one point.
Robinson was born in Milton Keynes, so he certainly could've played for England if he hadn't declared his allegiance to the US.
Robinson instead decided to play for the United States where his father grew up and eventually became a citizen.
England have called up both Lewis Hall and Rico Lewis as left-back options in this squad, and, based on the stats, you'd say that Robinson is out-performing both of those players.
Stats this season | Antonee Robinson | Lewis Hall | Rico Lewis |
Tackles per game | 3 | 1.5 | 1.7 |
Interceptions per game | 1.8 | 1.1 | 0.7 |
Crosses per game | 1.2 | 1 | 0 |
Assists | 3 | 1 | 2 |
Dribbles per game | 1.1 | 0.3 | 0.3 |
In another world, Robinson would be an England international, ending Fulham 13-year wait for one of their players to receive a cap.
