Last summer, when Nottingham Forest were about to start their huge quest for new goalkeepers, which lasts to this day, they were linked to SC Braga’s Matheus.

For a couple of months, the Portuguese media reported the Reds were strongly interested in the goalkeeper, and couldn’t find an agreement for his transfer.

Now as newspaper O Jogo shares a long interview with Matheus, they ask him about a potential move away from Braga, and he ended up recalling Nottingham Forest’s interest.

“If a good opportunity arises for me and Braga, I won’t close doors. There was interest from Nottingham last season, but the chairman thought it would be better if I stayed. If something good comes up for both of us, why not challenge myself?”

The chat about a potential exit from the club went on, and when asked about the offers which really attracted him, he mentioned Nottingham Forest again.

“There were a few that never got going. Nottingham, Manchester United, Nice and some from Brazil. None were finalised because the time wasn’t right. I have to confess that Nottingham moved me a little, I can’t lie. Sportingly and financially, it was a huge leap. I’d be playing in the best league in the world, playing in the best stadiums and facing the best players. It moved me. When it’s beneficial for you and your family, of course you think about it. You have to make the most of a short career.”

Nottingham Forest have been serious about bringing in new goalkeepers in the past year. They first landed Matt Turner from Arsenal and Odysseas Vlachodimos from Benfica, and in January, closed the signing of Matz Sels from Strasbourg.

The Reds aren’t done yet, as rumours from Brazil say they’re about to sign Carlos Miguel from Corinthians. The stories about Matheus, however, disappeared since last summer, and it doesn’t seem like they’re going to be trying again.
