Jordan Henderson being linked with a return to Sunderland has created some waves in the Netherlands, and earlier today we covered words from Ajax director Alex Kroes, with him saying the midfielder is highly valued at the Amsterdam club.

Ajax manager Francesco Farioli has been speaking at a press conference ahead of the club’s UEFA Europa League match against Qarabag on Thursday, and he was too asked about Henderson, specifically given the Sunderland links.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf quote the manager as saying: “I chose Jordan as captain and he is our leader. I don’t think I have to explain how important he is to our team.”

According to De Telegraaf, Farioli is aware Henderson misses his family and has not yet found a home he considers suitable.

After stating that, they quote the manager as saying:  “I am not his agent. But if all goes well, that has now been resolved. Henderson wants to bring Ajax back to where the club belongs, at the top.”

The 34-year-old is captain and has been an important part of the Ajax team this season, growing in stature since his much heralded arrival at the club.

Whilst a return to Sunderland would obviously be the football-romance option for Henderson to end his playing career, there’s a lot which has to fall into place for that to happen.

Jordan Henderson has made 13 appearances for Ajax so far this season.
