Danny Murphy could barely contain his excitement after he watched talkSPORT host Simon Jordan eat his words on Anthony Gordon in real time.

Gordon inked a new long-term contract with Newcastle on Tuesday to squash speculation linking him with a move to boyhood club Liverpool.

The 23-year-old joined the Magpies from Everton in January 2023 for £40million and has made 26 goal contributions for Eddie Howe‘s side since.

Murphy noted many had been critical regarding how much Newcastle forked out for Gordon, but he felt the opposite and claimed the fee ‘could be a snip’.

Jordan responded by stating Gordon was ‘a good player’ but not a ‘world beater’, which prompted talkSPORT co-host Jim White to remind him of a controversial claim made when the 23-year-old first moved.

White told Jordan he labelled Gordon a ‘rat’ and said the winger would ‘get what he deserved’.

“I don’t recall suggesting Anthony Gordon was a rat,” Jordan responded.

“I might’ve said rats deserting a sinking ship, because Everton at the time were a sinking ship. But context is very important.”

Luckily for White and Murphy, the talkSPORT producers managed to dig up the original audio of Jordan’s comments on Gordon in 2023.

Safe to say, the former Crystal Palace owner was left a little red-faced.

“I don’t like the way he’s behaved towards Everton,” Jordan told talkSPORT in 2023.

“I don’t like the way he’s behaved towards Everton. I can understand that everybody like rats want to desert a sinking ship, but you’re supposed to be able to help that football club, not disadvantage it by your behaviour. And I hope he gets what he deserves, reaps what he sows.”

White responded at the time by suggesting Gordon was not a rat, to which Jordan replied: “Well, he is a little bit, isn’t he? Everton have given him an opportunity.

“I know Danny Murphy, and I have to listened to the players that know far more about the ability of players than I do, thinks he is going to be a top, top player.

“But I think he still has a lot to prove and ultimately Everton deserve to be handled a little better by the player and with a little bit more respect.”

As the clip ended, Murphy was left in stitches and raised his arms up in triumph.

“Not only did you confirm what we said, you also confirmed my analysis on Gordon being a top player,” Murphy said.

“It was a double whammy!”

Murphy later added: “That was one of my favourite moments in all the years I’ve been here.”

However, Jordan was quick to point out ‘context is everything’.

“I didn’t call him a rat,” Jordan said.

“I suggested rats leaving a sinking ship as an analogy. I didn’t deny the context of saying he gets what he deserves, I wanted to remind myself of how I said it.

“The actual context was he was agitating for a move and I felt Everton deserved more respect.”
