Footballers often find different ways to make money away from the beautiful game.

Robbie Fowler was always a keen investor in property during his time at Liverpool and Manchester City, while David Beckham is one of the biggest names in fashion as well as being a football star.

Another player who found an alternative way to make a lot of extra cash is Kieran Gibbs.

Gibbs played alongside the likes of Mesut Ozil at Arsenal, and he now stands to make a plenty of money from a unique contract clause.

Indeed, the former Arsenal defender may not have been one of the Premier League's highest earners during his time at the Emirates, but due to an interesting contract clause he had at Inter Miami, Gibbs now stands to make millions.

Kieran Gibbs' Inter Miami contract clause

Gibbs decided to take half of his salary at Inter Miami in Bitcoin.

Speaking on the What Bitcoin Did Podcast, Gibbs shared how and why he decided to take half of his salary in Bitcoin.

Via Capology, Gibbs was earning $370,000-a-year during his time at Inter Miami, so he was investing $185,000-a-year into Bitcoin.

Gibbs is also a pundit these days, and he often gives his opinion on Arsenal.

"You take half of your salary now in Bitcoin? That's a thing now that is happening, why did you decide to do that? Gibbs was asked.

"I don't think that I'm the first player to try to do that, and I don't think I'll be the last. It's a right of ours to keep up or at least try to outpace inflation. At the moment if you're paid in dollars, you need at least a 10% pay rise a year in order to stop your life getting more expensive," Gibbs said.

"You can't get paid in gold, so all roads end up leading towards Bitcoin, that's one of the main reasons. Going deeper than that, Bitcoin for me has the ability to solve a lot of big problems in the world."

How much has Kieran Gibbs made?

Gibbs' move to invest heavily into Bitcoin was a risky decision, but it's a call that may well have paid off.

It's unknown whether or not Gibbs has yet cashed in on his Bitcoin holdings, but given how bullish he was on the Cryptocurrency, that seems unlikely.

The average price of Bitcoin during Kieran Gibbs' time at Inter Miami, between 2021-2023 was around $20,000, and now, the Cryptocurrency is trading at over $90,000.

If Gibbs had indeed invested half of his salary into Bitcoin, he stands to have made an absolute fortune.
