Ivan Toney to Tottenham may no longer happen this summer after what just occurred - opinion

So far this summer, one transfer that seems very likely to happen is Ivan Toney joining Tottenham.

Spurs are said to be ready to bid for the England international when Richarlison leaves – according to Alex Crook – with the Brazilian happy to depart N17 this summer amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

A story from talkSPORT even claimed that Toney wants to join Tottenham.

Elsewhere, The Sun have described Spurs as the Brentford No.17’s most likely destination this summer.

Now – however – Ivan Toney to Tottenham is in jeopardy…

Why Ivan Toney may now stay at Brentford

Brentford seem ready to sell Toney – who only has 12 months left on his contract – as Thomas Frank spent a club record £30m fee on Igor Thiago as the Englishman’s replacement.

The Dane confirmed as much in a press conference, saying: “Maybe we are selling a player but we are prepared for that… this time we are prepared and brought in Igor Thiago.”

However, the Brazilian has now suffered a concerning meniscus injury on his first appearance for the Bees, and will undergo scans to determine the severity of the problem next week.

If the issue rules Thiago out of action for months, we believe Brentford will hang on to Toney – even in spite of his contract situation.

The Bees struggled tremendously while Toney was banned for the first half of last season, with Frank’s side on a run of seven defeats in their past eight Premier League games just before the 28-year-old’s ben ended in January, leaving the Bees three points above the relegation zone.

Brentford lack goalscorers in almost every other area of the pitch, which put them in that worrying position last season, so if Thiago – Frank’s new talisman – is seriously injured, we would expect the Bees to keep Toney for at least the start of the 2024/25 campaign, or else relegation fears could return without a talismanic figure leading the line.

Alternative for Tottenham

While Toney has been heavily, heavily linked with a move to Tottenham this summer, there is another striker Spurs could sign if Brentford decide to keep the man from Northampton.

A story from Fox Sports now claims that Tottenham are set to hold talks with the agent of Mexico international Santiago Gimenez later this week about a potential move to N17.

Therefore, the Feyenoord No.29 could be the man to lead Ange Postecoglou’s attack next season, if a deal for Toney fails to materialise due to Thiago’s injury.
