West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen has congratulated youngster Oliver Scarles after he was awarded the Player of the Match award in the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa on Friday (January 10).

The 19-year-old academy product made his first senior-team start in the defeat to Villa but was unable to stop the visitors from progressing to the next round.

Scarles ended his game having won 2/3 tackles, 100 per cent of his aerial duels, and made four recoveries, impressing in Graham Potter’s first game at the helm.

Brazil international Lucas Pacqueta gave his new manager the perfect start, opening the scoring after just nine minutes with a cool finish past Robin Olsen in the Villa goal.

Aston Villa dominated proceedings from there, and finally got the equaliser in the 71st minute through Amadou Onana after West Ham failed to clear their lines from a corner.

In-form Morgan Rogers got the winner just five minutes later, capping off a fine run from striker Ollie Watkins.

Bowen, 28, was forced to watch on from afar after fracturing his foot in the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool earlier in the season, ruling him out for several weeks.

Still, he was clearly impressed by his young teammate, taking to Instagram to share an image of the youngster and congratulate him on a fine performance, saying: “Well deserved brother.”

West Ham will be able to fully concentrate on the league now, sitting in 14th with six wins, five draws, nine defeats, and 23 points from their 20 games.

Potter will take charge of his first Premier League game as West Ham manager on Tuesday (January 14th) as West London club Fulham travel to the east.
