Keith Wyness 'convinced' about Newcastle financial issues after agent fees drama

Everton's former chief Keith Wyness has insisted he is “convinced” there are no financial issues at Newcastle despite drama over unpaid agent fees.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed he has “not come across” a similar story during his time in football.
The Athletic‘s David Ornstein revealed on 20 December that agents of multiple Newcastle players have been “left in the dark” after fees owed to them were not paid on time by the club.
The article claims “commission instalments” were due in September but were not paid – with “no explanation provided as to what is happening or when it will be resolved”.
It was also claimed that image rights payments to top squad members were delayed in a similar manner but that situation has been rectified.
Newcastle’s Saudi-backed ownership have struggled to make their vast wealth pay on the football pitch since taking over in 2021 – with the Premier League’s financial rules restricting the influx of cash at St James’ Park.
‘Financial issues’ not behind agent fee drama at Newcastle, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider's Insider Track podcast: "I was surprised by this, it goes back to payments due in September.
"The club claim it was a mix-up, invoices weren't rendered on time, etc.
"I've never come across this before in my time, and when I spoke to my financial team – we always knew when payments were due to agents.
"It's not down to financial resources, I'm convinced it's not. I don't think it's anything more than paperwork and bureaucracy issues.
"I don't believe there are issues with liquidity at Newcastle."
