Everton's former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Newcastle are still “sailing close to the wind” with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) despite being poised to announce club-record revenues.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Tyneside club have spent a “surprising” amount on players since the Saudi-backed takeover in 2021.
New analysis by analytics firm Off The Pitch (16 December) has forecasted that Newcastle will post club-record revenue of £286million for the the 2023-24 financial year.
The Magpies will release the official results in the first quarter of 2025.
A major driver in the historic financial year is participation in the Champions League group stage – an achievement which has not been replicated this season.
Club-record revenue not enough to stave off points deduction fears at Newcastle, says Wyness
Newcastle struggled to comply with PSR in the 2023-24 campaign and were left scrambling to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson before the new financial year began in order to avoid a potential poitns deduction.
Wyness told Football Insider's Insider Track podcast: "It's all about the spending at Newcastle.
"It's very well bringing it in, but they're just spending it as soon as they get it.
"They've spent a lot on players. It surprised me when I actually looked at the figures, it's a big number.
"The squad is strong, but they're sailing close to the wind now with PSR. They've got to pull their finger out in the sponsorship areas."
