'Kobbie Mainoo concerned by Amorim Man United project as Chelsea links emerge'
Kobbie Mainoo is "concerned" about the Man United future under Ruben Amorim as his contract negotiations have hit a stalemate, according to the Daily Mail.
According to the outlet's website on 7 January, the midfielder has yet to agree a new contract and "could be sold this month".
His current deal ends in 2027, but talks have hit an impasse which has alerted clubs around Europe including rivals Chelsea.
But United remain "hopeful" a compromise can be agreed with their academy graduate.
However, the report suggests Mainoo has concerns over the "direction of the club" and his "chances of playing Champions League football" as the club linger in mid-table despite the ex-Sporting boss’ arrival in place of Erik ten Hag.
Man United may have to part with key players to prevent PSR issues
Football Insider opinion
Amorim has faced a tough start to life at Old Trafford, with the club currently sitting 13th in the league, having won only two of their nine matches.
It's apparent that the United hierarchy wants certain high-earning players to depart. Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, and Antony have all recently been linked with moves away.
While the Portuguese manager will likely want to make his mark on the squad quickly, his efforts could be hampered if key players like Mainoo express a desire to leave.
However, he may not have the final say in these matters as the club are under pressure to sell due to PSR regulations.
United would prefer to sell someone like Rashford, but his high wages and transfer fee have made him less appealing to potential buyers.
Rashford's sale could offer the club an opportunity to show 100% profit on the PSR balance sheet, but so could Mainoo, given that he is also an academy graduate.
This situation may force the owners' hand, as they are under pressure to back their new manager with signings.
Amorim has demonstrated he is unafraid to make bold decisions, as shown by his choice to drop Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho for the Manchester derby.
However, things could quickly turn sour if key players the manager wants to keep are sold for reasons related to ownership and financial constraints.
In other news, Man United are planning to sign a new striker after this develoment.
