Tottenham Hotspur were able to give their fans something to cheer about by the end of their League Cup meeting with Coventry City on Wednesday night.

Admittedly, this wasn’t the case for about 88 minutes of the game, but Spurs managed to get back on level terms before winning it late on.

Tottenham were seemingly down and out as the Sky Blues led 1-0 going into the latter stages of the encounter.

However, Spurs then found the equaliser in the 88th minute, Dejan Kulusevski setting up Djed Spence to slide home.

Then, as the game went into added time and with penalties looming, Rodrigo Bentancur set up Brennan Johnson for a dramatic – and well-taken – winner.

It was a great occasion for both players, as Johnson had been struggling confidence-wise, while Spence was controversially left out of Spurs’ Europa League group-stage squad.

James Maddison hails Djed Spence after his equaliser for Tottenham at Coventry

James Maddison was among those who praised Spence on social media, as Tottenham’s Instagram account shared – and praised – his equaliser.

Maddison wrote “love it brother” in the comments, while fans called for the £20million man to get not just more game time, but more starts.

Spence gives Postecoglou food for thought

It wasn't that long ago that Spence was being talked about as a potential departure from Spurs, but he has worked so hard to get back in contention.

The outcome of this is that he remains at the club and is in line for more minutes, but leaving him out of the Europa League squad will have been a bitter pill to swallow.

At the same time, Postecoglou did say that Spence would be in line for “plenty of football” if he kept up the good work, and both of these things are very much happening.

Spence’s impressive appearance will surely have given the Tottenham boss more food for thought in terms of his options in the Premier League and domestic cups.
