Luis Suarez hit back at Andreas Pereira after Uruguay beat Brazil in the quarter final of the Copa America on Saturday evening.

The game went to a penalty shootout with Manuel Ugarte, who is wanted by Manchester United, scoring Uruguay’s decisive spot-kick after Eder Militao’s attempt was saved and Douglas Luiz hit the post.

Uruguay, who were reduced to 10 men against Brazil after Nahitan Nandez was sent off, will now play Colombia, who beat Panama 5-0 earlier on Saturday, in the Copa America semi final on Wednesday.

Suarez, meanwhile, took exception to the comments made by Pereira before their quarter-final tie after the Fulham midfielder claimed that Brazil had a far superior side to Uruguay.

‘The Uruguayan national team is very good, but if you take it name by name, we have a team that they dream of having,’ Pereira said.

When asked about Pereira’s verdict after Uruguay knocked Brazil out of the tournament, Suarez said: ‘We have the best midfielders in the world, top-level players.

‘To talk about Uruguay, you have to have a little more respect, know the history of Uruguay.

‘Before I say which players want to be on the Brazilian national team, I have to say that the person who made that comment was [Giorgian] De Arrascaeta’s reserve [at Flamengo], who is the best player in Brazilian football.

‘So imagine what it's like for us to hear that.’

Speaking after Brazil’s defeat, Pereira insisted that he did not mean any disrespect towards Suarez and Uruguay.

‘I simply said that I preferred it and I think our players are better, so if they used that to their advantage, they can do whatever they want,’ Pereira said.

‘But at no time did I show any disrespect towards Uruguay.’
