Man City transfer ban: 'Finance expert update amid January spending spree'
Man City spending heavily in the January transfer window in order to prepare for a transfer ban is not believed to be the case, football finance expert Stefan Borson has said.
It looks like being a busy month in market for the reigning Premier League champions, who have just announced a bumper nine-and-a-half-year contract for striker Erling Haaland.
Meanwhile, the club have reached an agreement in principle to sign Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for £29.4million (Sky Sports) and Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens for £33.5million (Sky Sports).
It still remains to be seen what punishment the club might receive for the 115 charges brought against them for breaching Premier League financial rules.
Borson though has downplayed any suggestion that the reason they are now so busy in the transfer window is due to the fact they are preparing to be banned from making signings in the future.
Posting on X about any such suggestions, the football finance expert suggested any punishment would be enforced differently, and that there would be a delay even if one was to be imposed, writing:
“To address the idea some have discussed that all the signings are prep for a transfer ban, I would suggest none of the allegations would properly be penalised by a transfer ban and, like others, it is likely the club would have a window to prepare via either a delay in the sanction hearing or appeal.
“Furthermore, the approach in the Summer was the anti-thesis of preparation for a transfer ban so I don’t believe this is related to a transfer ban.”
Man City transfer ban update will bring relief around the Etihad
Football Insider Verdict
This has already been a difficult season on the pitch for Pep Guardiola’s side with the defence of their title falling well short of standards and expectations.
That has highlighted the fact that many of this current Man City squad are no longer capable of performing at the level they previously could.
As a result there is a need for the club to undergo something of an overhaul of their playing options in the window if they are to get back to the top of the table.
It therefore more likely that the business going on at the Etihad in the current market is being done with that in mind.
Not having a transfer ban can therefore only be a good thing for Man City, giving them more scope to make the necessary changes in the future as well.
Even so until clarity is issued, some concern will surely remain around the club about if and how they might be punished for those 115 charges hanging over them.
