Man United need to investigate re-signing Scott McTominay given his form since leaving the club, Graeme Souness says.

The former Scotland international has slammed the Red Devils for their decision to let the midfielder leave the club while investing in the likes of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte.

Man United allowed McTominay to leave Old Trafford last summer, when the 28-year-old was sold to Serie A side Napoli.

That was despite the fact that the 28-year-old had become a reliable performer and source of goals from the centre of the park for the Red Devils.

Now, Souness believes that is a decision that those in charge at Old Trafford may be coming to regret.

Since completing his move away, many Man United fans have been stunned by the impressive performances of McTominay for Napoli.

The midfielder has continued to score and catch the eye in Serie A, helping his new side to lead the Italian top-flight standings as things stand.

McTominay also scored the winning goal for Scotland from the penalty spot in their Nations League clash with Greece on Thursday (20 March).

Now Souness has suggested Man United will regretting their decision to let the midfielder go for the price they did, especially when considering how much they invested in other individuals in that position.

Writing about the Red Devils’ decision to let McTominay go in his column for the Daily Mail, the former Liverpool and Newcastle manager said: “He was 27 years old and not hurting United with his wages when the club's 'decision-makers' thought it was a bright idea to sell him to Napoli for £25million.

“They'd gone out and spent £58m on an ageing, 30-year-old Casemiro, and paid him £370,000 a week. And another £42m on Manuel Ugarte. Collective transfer fees of £100m.

“Would someone at United please hold their hand up and say, 'This was my shout.' Because it's been an atrocious piece of judgment. The perfect example of the mismanagement on an industrial scale at that club since Fergie [Sir Alex Ferguson] packed in.

“McTominay has flourished at Napoli. Maybe United should be asking themselves how much it will cost to get him back.”

Man United will not get Napoli man back easily

Football Insider Verdict

Whether they want to come back or not, it would surely be incredibly difficult for the Red Devils to bring back McTominay when the transfer window reopens.

The midfielder has proven to be a key player for Napoli immediately, so they are not going to want to let him go so soon after getting him.

Indeed, with a contract in Italy until the summer of 2028, they are under no pressure to sell him anytime sooner either.

As a result, McTominay is not going to be a cheap target for anyone this summer, and there are already questions about how Man United fund both their transfer business and new stadium.

That may mean the 28-year-old is not someone they can afford to bring back to the club in the summer transfer window.

Of course, it is also worth noting that regardless of all that, McTominay may not want to go back to a club that were so willing to let him go just last summer either, so a reunion is hard to imagine.
