Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand names club that could be 'best fit' for Marcus Rashford this January

Rio Ferdinand says he would be ‘surprised’ if Marcus Rashford did not leave Manchester United this January and believes Borussia Dortmund may be the best fit for the forward.
Rashford announced last month that he was keen for a ‘new challenge’ away from Old Trafford and the 27-year-old has not featured for United since, seemingly frozen out of Ruben Amorim’s plans.
Several clubs have been credited with an interest in Rashford in the intervening weeks, including AC Milan, Como, Galatasaray and Dortmund, and the Red Devils are open to offers for the England international from potential suitors overseas.
The likes of West Ham and Tottenham have also been tentatively linked, though United are reportedly refusing to do business with a Premier League rival this month.
‘I would be surprised if he’s still a Manchester United player come the end of this transfer window, I’ve got to be honest,’ ex-United and England defender Ferdinand told TNT Sports on Rashford’s situation.
‘Listen, I don’t think it’s about who is responsible for it, there is going to be blame on each side: the club, management maybe as well, there’s probably a shared amount of blame.
‘But ultimately, if you look at it when you’re a player, you look at yourself first and you go, “What could I have done better?”, and that’s what I hope he will be doing.
‘I hope he’s then going, “Right, I’m not looking back anymore, I’m going to look forward”, and if it’s not Manchester United, wherever it may be, I would wish Marcus Rashford all the best because I want to see him do well.
Ferdinand doesn’t blame Amorim for leaving Rashford out of United’s recent matches, arguing that the Portuguese can ill afford to ‘mess about and wait around’ in the Old Trafford hot seat.
‘Amorim has come in and he’s got to make quick decisions, that’s the job of a manager when you come in mid-season especially,’ the six-time Premier League winner added.
‘You haven’t got time to mess about and wait around
‘He’s put demands on these players it seems, from the outside and if he isn’t getting the response he wants, to the level he wants, then he’s got to make a decision.
‘It seems at this moment in time that Marcus hasn’t responded the way the manager would have wanted.’
AC Milan have asserted themselves as the frontrunners in the race for Rashford’s signature, with the attacker’s brother and agent flying to Italy for negotiations earlier this month.
But Ferdinand doubts there is space for Rashford to play in his favoured position at the San Siro given Rafael Leao’s presence on the left flank.
When asked whether AC Milan could be a good fit, Ferdinand replied: ‘I don’t know.
‘Everyone’s talking about AC Milan but AC Milan have got Rafael Leao. Unless he goes and then Marcus can go in and play that position…
‘Rafael Leao is their best player and he plays the same position as Marcus, unless Marcus is gonna go and play up front. I just don’t see that being the case.
‘I’d be surprised if he went to AC Milan, I’ve got to be honest, given the current players they have there in the position that Marcus plays.’
Asked if Dortmund could be the right team for Rashford, Ferdinand responded: ‘In terms of personnel and players, I think Dortmund is probably a better fit in terms of what is available to him with his position.
‘They’ve shown that English players can go there and thrive as well.
‘They’ve got a young English boy, [Jamie] Gittens, there at the moment as well but he plays that side as well.
‘So nowhere’s easy! But Marcus Rashford has the ability to go and be a player and play at most clubs but you’ve got to go and prove it now.’
