Marco Silva will be a difficult manager to work with for the Tottenham hierarchy if the Fulham boss takes over from Ange Postecoglou, a former player for the Portuguese says.

Postecoglou is coming under increasing pressure at Tottenham, with his side sat 14th in the Premier League table, well below pre-season expectations, having finished fifth last season.

An injury crisis has wreaked havoc at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but despite having the majority of his squad available now, results have not improved.

Spurs lost 2-0 to a resurgent Fulham side pushing for Europe under Silva on Sunday (16 March), sparking debates over how long Postecoglou will remain at the club.

Marco Silva will ‘demand an expectation’ at Tottenham

Speaking on talkSPORT, Troy Deeney gave his thoughts on Silva potentially moving to Tottenham if they sack Postecoglou.

Ally McCoist asked the former Watford striker – who had previously played under the current Fulham manager – what he made of Silva, Thomas Frank and Andoni Iraola being shortlisted by Spurs, saying (7.39am, 18 March): "I obviously worked with Marco Silva (at Watford 2017-2018), he wont play nice with you, he'll tell the ownership exactly what he wants.

“He'll demand an expectation. Will they allow for that? I don't think so.

“So there's a lot going on at Spurs, for as nice as it is, the training ground and the facilities, what's the expectation? And once we know that, then we can grow.”

It had previously been suggested that winning the Europa League may be enough to save Postecoglou from being sacked, but Simon Jordan thinks that with a bottom-half finish in the league on the cards, that may not be enough to save the Australian manager’s job.

Marco Silva may choose to stay with Fulham if they qualify for Europe

Football Insider Verdict

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd had previously suggested Silva was “next” for a job at a big club, given the outstanding work he has done in his time at Craven Cottage.

However, it does beg the question, given his links to Tottenham, would the Spurs job qualify as a “big” club? And would it even be a step-up for Silva?

The facilities are undoubtedly in the North London club’s favour, as Spurs currently have the best stadium in the world.

But on the pitch, things have been miserable for a long time, and a plethora of high-profile managers have been unable to fix that.

Fulham are trending upwards, and have been for some time under the Portuguese manager. It would take a miracle for Spurs to finish above them in Europe, and unless Tottenham win the Europa League, there is little they would have to offer Silva performance-wise.

If and when the Portuguese manager does leave Craven Cottage, it will likely be for a club above the Whites in the league, and competing regularly in the Champions League.
