Marcus Rashford and Reece James showed their support for Callum Wilson after Newcastle defeated Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.

The win marked the Magpies’ first major trophy for 70 years, ending Liverpool‘s final chance to claim multiple piece of silverware this season.

With both clubs travelling south to compete at Wembley, Newcastle were buoyed by a raucous travelling fanbase, turning the home of football into a cauldron of energy, and that fervour translated onto the pitch.

The Magpies took the game by the scruff of the neck, scoring on the stroke of halftime, thanks to a brilliant header from Dan Burn, before Liverpool transfer target Alexander Isak doubled their lead.

Federico Chiesa scored a late consolation goal, but Newcastle were not to be denied their moment, claiming a historic 2-1 win, having previously knocked Arsenal, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest out of the competition.

Alexander Isak steals the show as Callum Wilson makes late cameo

Despite only appearing for nine minutes, Wilson will go down in history as one of the Newcastle players who ended their long-running quest for a major title.

Following the win, the former Bournemouth striker posted a series of photos to Instagram, captioned simply: “CHAMPIONS!!”

The post was then liked by Barcelona target Marcus Rashford, and Chelsea captain Reece James, showing their support for the striker, having spent time in the England set-up together.

Whilst Wilson appeared to close out the win, Newcastle and their fans have Isak to thank, after the Sweden international put in a stunning performance, scoring the winner, and leading the line brilliantly for his side.

Newcastle to go hunting in summer window for strikers

Football Insider Verdict

In spite of winning the Carabao Cup, and still being in the hunt for Champions League qualification, Newcastle will likely be forced into finding at least one new striker in the summer.

Isak looks set for a huge move away from St James’ Park, with Arsenal, Liverpool, and a number of European giants all attempting to sign the former Borussia Dortmund star.

Wilson himself could also be departing Newcastle this summer. The England international has been plagued by injuries in recent years, and his contract expires in the summer.

Whilst William Osula has shown flashes of talent, it is unlikely that Eddie Howe will lean on him as his primary option upfront next season, should Isak leave.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with a move to Newcastle, but he also would likely be a back-up, given his own injury woes at Everton.
