Arsenal and Chelsea transfer target Mathys Tel’s stance on his preferred club has emerged as he nears Bayern Munich exit, reports The Independent.

Fans of the Blues had urged their club to sign the young French striker from Bayern, after Tel was linked with a deal that would have seen Christopher Nkunku move to Munich in a swap deal [The Standard].

That move has been put in to doubt, as Tel reportedly may be hesitant about a move to Stamford Bridge, due to the abundance of players who currently occupy the striker position at the club.

The former Rennes striker is instead known to be “very open” to a move to London rivals Arsenal, due to the possibility for first-team football because of the thinness of the Gunners’ attacking options.

Kai Havertz is currently Arsenal’s only recognised striker available to manager Mikel Arteta, after an injury to Gabriel Jesus ended the Brazilian’s season.

Man United are also monitoring the French striker, as Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee continue to underperform.

Football Insider Verdict

Despite his obvious talent, Tel’s Bayern career has struggled to get going, having made 82 appearances for the club in three years.

Whilst he has featured a good amount for the Bavarians, those appearances have mainly come from the bench, as the arrival of Harry Kane in August 2023 relegated Tel to a supporting role.

The Frenchman has all the qualities to become a world-class striker, which is why Bayern bought him as a 17-year-old.

The lack of consistent minutes may now hinder the 19-year-olds development, and a move away from the club to join Arsenal would be a smart choice.

Despite a sluggish start to the season, Arsenal found their form over the Christmas period, and sit only six points behind league leaders Liverpool.

With Man City currently suffering a nightmare season, the Gunners have a genuine chance to win their first league title since 2004.

Injuries to Jesus and Bukayo Saka have put a dampener on proceedings, but with City out of the title race, this may be Arsenal’s only shot at a Premier League crown, and they should act fast to give Arteta the firepower he needs.

In other news, Arsenal have made a decision on signing Mohammed Kudus from West Ham.
