Arsenal fans are livid at Mikel Arteta and his transfer policy after the Gunners boss revealed the extent of Ethan Nwaneri’s injury.
Arsenal dropped points in the title race after drawing 1-1 away to Brighton on Saturday (4 January).
The Gunners scored the opening goal thanks to their teenage sensation, Nwaneri, before having a controversial penalty given against William Saliba.
Joao Pedro slotted home from the spot and Arsenal were unable to find a winner, in large part due to missing Nwaneri’s creativity after he was substituted at half-time.
17-year-old Nwaneri started at right-wing as a replacement for the injured Bukayo Saka and impressed, in spite of having never played there before.
However, with Nwaneri now set to also spend time out injured [Daily Mail], Arsenal are without a natural right-winger and may look to find a replacement in this month’s transfer window.
Arsenal fans tear into Arteta over squad’s lack of depth
Arteta has been criticised routinely over the last few seasons for failing to add striking depth to a thin front line.
The Gunners have been linked to a number of strikers, including Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres, and will now have to expand their search with both Nwaneri and Saka out.
This season is viewed as a real opportunity by fans of the North London side to finally claim the Premier League title, a trophy that has eluded them since 2004.
However, having not signed a player since who can play on the right flank since 2022 (Fabio Vieira, who is currently on loan at Porto – [Standard]), Arteta may be forced to finally address the problem position.
As a result of Nwaneri’s injury, fans have taken to social media to label the the issue as “Mikel Arteta’s failure in squad building,” and “stubbornness from Arteta.”
