Paul Mitchell hasn't had the most blockbuster of starts to life as Newcastle's Sporting Director.

The Magpies had a very quiet summer transfer window, but there were a few deals they tried to do.

Marc Guehi was a key target for Newcastle in the summer, while Anthony Elanga was another player Eddie Howe's side looked at.

The transfer window may be closed, but the work behind the scenes never stops, and according to The Mail's Sami Mokbel, Newcastle have their eye on another target from within the Premier League.

Indeed, Mokbel says that Newcastle are having a little look at signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.

Newcastle have an eye on Eberechi Eze

Mokbel shared what he knows about Newcastle's transfer plans.

The journalist says that there are multiple clubs looking at signing Eberechi Eze, and Newcastle are amongst his admirers.

Tottenham have recently also been linked with a move for Eze.

"Let's say we don't go for a centre-back and go for a forward position, any rumours, any talk for any options in January?" Mokbel was asked.

"No, not any names. Listen, I do know that, and you're not the only club, but I do know there has been a little look at Eze, Eberechi Eze at Crystal Palace, that is a straightforward deal to do because he has a release clause. That's £68m all-in, and I think that re-activates next summer," Mokbel said.

Eze deal may affect Marc Guehi

Eze is a target for Newcastle, but make no mistake about it, Newcastle may struggle to do this deal if they want to also sign Marc Guehi.

Yes, as Mokbel says, there is a release clause involved here, so a deal could be done, but if Newcastle did go for Eze, they may have to kiss goodbye to any chances of signing Marc Guehi.

Steve Parish made it clear in the summer that Guehi would cost Newcastle a fortune.

"Nobody has got to the valuation yet. If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money," Parish said.

"It's not near the point where we have to make a decision. He's a generational talent."

Newcastle couldn't pressure Palace into selling Guehi in the summer, and that task would become that much harder if the Magpies spent big on Eze.

Not only would Palace be under less financial pressure after selling Eze, they'd also be less-inclined to sell their two star players to the same team in the same transfer window.

Newcastle's upcoming transfer business will be interesting, and the Magpies may well end up signing one of Crystal Palace's star players in the future.
