Newcastle chiefs are still weighing up plans for a future stadium – with both a new build and redevelopment of St James’ Park considered.

It has been widely reported that the Saudi Arabian ownership are leaning towards building a new super stadium adjacent to the club’s current home.

Newcastle's new stadium is expected to cost £1billion if they decide to push forward with the plans.

St James’ Park’s capacity stands at 52,305 and is no longer considered fit for purpose as clubs across the Premier League look to supercharge revenues.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has answered key questions on how Newcastle will fund the project.

‘Money won’t be an issue’ for Newcastle, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness has insisted banks and financial institutions will be “queuing up” to lend Newcastle the required funds.

That is in contrast to Man United, who have announced a 100,000-seat new stadium but haven’t revealed how it will be funded.

Wyness insisted the focus of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) will be on making the right decision for Newcastle.

Club (Stadium)Capacity
Man United (Old Trafford)74,197
Tottenham (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium)62,850
West Ham (London Stadium)62,500
Liverpool (Anfield)61,276
Arsenal (Emirates Stadium)60,704
Man City (Etihad Stadium)52,900
Newcastle (St James' Park)52,258
England’s biggest club stadiums

He told Football Insider's Inside Track podcast: "There'll be no shortage of people wanting to lend money to the PIF.

"Their bank guarantees are pretty strong.

"It'll be a case of the cocktail of equity and debt to get the lowest interest rates for the long term.

"Newcastle are in a very strong position, so they'll push the payments out across 25-30 years. It's very achievable.

"They've just got to focus on getting the decision right.

"It's still not been finalised as to whether we're going to see a new stadium, which is what they seem to be leaning towards, or a revamp of St James' Park.

"Cool heads have got to decide that. But there's no doubt that if they go all the way with a new 70,000 stadium – money won't be an issue.

"If I was a bank, I'd be queuing up to lend money to the club right now."

Major update on Guimaraes leaving Newcastle

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (19 March) that Newcastle will be confident of keeping captain Bruno Guimaraes if they qualify for the Champions League.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with the midfielder – but it is believed Mikel Arteta's side will find a deal too hard to do.

However, it is believed "question marks" will arise over his long-term future if the Magpies fail to qualify for next season's Champions League and strong offers arrive in the summer window.
