Morgan Rogers has been hailed by two of his ex-Man City teammates after putting the Premier League champions to the sword with Aston Villa.

The attacker, who never made a senior appearance in four years with Pep Guardiola’s side between 2019 and 2023, was in match-winning form against his old club at Villa Park on Saturday (21 December).

After latching on to an excellent Youri Tielemans pass to set up Jhon Duran for the opener, Rogers himself got on the scoresheet with a well-taken finish that eventually secured a 2-1 win for Unai Emery’s side.

Post-match, the Aston Villa man took to Instagram to celebrate that win, and was then hailed by Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Ipswich’s Liam Delap, who both played with him at youth level at Man City.

While Palmer went for an emphatic rendition of the attacker’s nickname, Delap simply wrote “wow”.

Man City get extra insult to injury after defeat at Aston Villa

Football Insider Opinion

That defeat to Aston Villa extended a dismal run for Guardiola’s side, who have now lost nine and won just one of their last 12 outings in all competitions.

Such a run will be extremely hard to take for those of a Man City persuasion given the incredibly high standards they have set themselves in recent years.

Now with some of their former players seemingly enjoying their latest setback here, there may be more frustration added to the situation at the Etihad.

Indeed, many may be wondering just what might have been had they decided to retain the likes of this trio.

We all know how good Rogers and Palmer have been, but even Delap in a struggling Ipswich side is impressing so much that he is being linked with moves up the Premier League.

Man City therefore may feel that in doing so they have missed out on some very useful assets who could have got them out of the struggles they currently find themselves in.

In other news, the chances of Man City signing Jarrad Branthwaite have been revealed.
