Peter Crouch has joked about his former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard ahead of a clash with Chelsea.

The pair played together for the Reds between 2005 and 2008, winning an FA Cup and finishing as runners-up in the Champions League.

Since his retirement, the former England striker has moved into punditry and podcasting, whilst his former teammate has tried his hand at management.

Gerrard left his role at Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League in January, and has been linked with a return to Rangers, having won the Premiership for the Bears in 2021.

The former Liverpool captain had also been linked with a move to Blackburn to replace John Eustace, but Rovers instead turned to Valerian Ismael.

Steven Gerrard is currently out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq.

Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard team-up to take down Chelsea legends

The duo will both feature for a Liverpool legends team, hosting Chelsea legends at Anfield on Saturday (22 March).

Reds legend Kenny Dalglish will take charge of the Merseyside team, whilst Champions League-winning boss, Roberto Di Matteo, will be in charge the Blues.

For the first time, the match will feature women on either side, with Natasha Dowie turning out for Liverpool and Katie Chapman for Chelsea.

Ahead of the match, Crouch poked fun at himself, tweeting an image of his and Gerrard’s kits in the changing rooms, captioned: “Gonna have to carry him again aren’t I”.

The former Rangers manager famously lifted a number of Liverpool sides past their expected limitations, helping them secure trophies against sides far more capable on paper, including in the 2006 FA Cup final against West Ham, in which both players played.

Steven Gerrard could return to Rangers after 49ers Enterprises takeover

Football Insider Verdict

With the 49ers Enterprises looking to buy Rangers, the stage could be set for a reunion between Gerrard and the Bears.

During his time in Scotland, the former Liverpool captain was held in incredibly high regard, capping off his time at Ibrox with a Premiership title.

Whilst at Rangers, Gerrard was expected to use the experience to hone his managerial skills, before taking over from Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

However, the Englishman instead chose to move to Aston Villa in 2021 and it proved to be too big a step, too soon.

The Villains floundered with Gerrard in charge, eventually moving on from the former England star, replacing him with Emery.

Following that experience, he made the move to Saudi Arabia, where once again, the ex-Rangers boss looked out of his depth.

If Gerrard hopes to take charge at Liverpool one day, he will need to do some serious work on his reputation as a manager and a Rangers side equipped with a healthy transfer budget may be exactly the place to do it.
