Phil Foden has reacted to his former Man City teammate’s latest achievement after Riyad Mahrez took to social media on Friday.
The 34-year-old played 69 minutes as Algeria claimed all three points over Botswana in their quest to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, with goals coming from Wolfsburg’s Mohamed Amoura and Marseille’s Amine Gouiri.
Mahrez has shone since leaving Man City, notching 25 goals and 27 assists in 68 appearances for Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, and despite his age, he continues to thrive on the international stage.
He has since been replaced by Savinho and Jeremy Doku at Pep Guardiola‘s request in Manchester, both of whom have continued to torment Premier League defenders, but Mahrez remains a much-loved figure at the Etihad.
Riyad Mahrez reaches milestone for Algeria national team
Taking to Instagram [20 March], Mahrez wrote: “La 100ieme,” making reference to the fact he has now won a century of caps for his national team, marking it with a simple victory over Botswana.
The likes of Said Benrahma and Roberto Firmino were amongst those supporting the winger, with City duo Foden and Nathan Ake also liking the post following the match.
Pep Guardiola set to continue stripping of Man City squad
Football Insider verdict
Guardiola is under increasing pressure at Man City to turn the club’s fortunes around, having experienced a torrid 2024/25 campaign of underachievement and difficult defeats.
That is likely to take a whole summer of changes, with Kevin De Bruyne’s Man City exit potentially just being the tip of the iceberg, with Mateo Kovacic, John Stones and Ederson all linked with exits.
The Citizens are still aiming to finish in a top-four spot because, without Champions League football, the task of drawing people to the Etihad Stadium this summer becomes much harder.
Premier League standings | Points |
4. Chelsea | 49 |
5. Man City | 48 |
6. Newcastle | 47 |
7. Brighton | 47 |
There is still the chance of silverware, however, with their 3-1 win over Plymouth Argyle setting up an FA Cup quarter-final clash with Bournemouth ahead of them.
While Rodri, Ake and Manuel Akanji all remain sidelined for Man City, the team need to show as much fight and emotion as they possibly can before the season finally comes to an end.
