Portugal and France meet in the quarter final of Euro 2024 in Stuttgart on Friday night in a repeat of the final in Paris eight years ago.

France lost that final in extra time in 2016 but head into Friday night’s match as favourites, despite enduring a stuttering campaign thus far.

Didier Deschamps’ side kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign in Germany with a narrow 1-0 win over Austria, which was followed by a goalless draw with the Netherlands before being held to a 1-1 draw by an already eliminated Poland in their final Group D game.

Picking up just five points in the group stage meant that two-time European champions only finished second in their group, to many people’s surprise, with Austria coming out on top.

The Round of 16 saw France overcome Belgium by 1-0 scoreline, which leaves the French having scored three goals in the tournament so far, consisting of two own goals and one penalty, while the only goal they have conceded has also come from the penalty spot.

France head into their quarter final clash having drawn three of their last five matches, losing just one of their last 12.

Portugal needed a penalty shoot-out to beat Slovenia in order to book their place in the last eight of Euro 2024, in which their goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved all three penalties in a 3-0 victory on spot kicks.

Roberto Martinez’s side started the campaign with back-to-back wins to book their place in the knockout stage as group winners with a game to spare, having scored a 92nd minute winner in their opener against the Czech Republic before beating Turkey 3-0 in their second game.

The Portuguese were then on the wrong end of one of the shocks of the championships so far as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to major tournament debutants Georgia, before sneaking their way through their Round of 16 clash against Slovenia on Monday night.

France lead 19-6 in wins across all of their previous matches against Portugal, with the latter having won only one of their last 14 matches against the French, coming in their famous Euro 2016 final victory.

The last time the two sides met came in the group stage of this competition three years ago in Budapest, when three penalties were scored in a 2-2 draw.

Deschamps and Martinez have met on the touchline twice before, while the Spaniard was in charge of Belgium – the Frenchman came out on top on both occasions, most recently in the semi final of the Nations League in Turin in 2021 when scored three goals in the last half hour to overturn a 2-0 deficit en route to lifting the trophy.
