Newcastle United have been chasing Marc Guehi for what feels like an eternity, with the Toon yet to reach an agreement for the Crystal Palace defender.

The England international has been subject to multiple bids from the Magpies for his services, though Fabrizio Romano has claimed Newcastle believe they’re close to signing Guehi after numerous discussions with the Eagles.

With the transfer window closing this Friday, time is against Newcastle in their bid to sign the 24-year-old defender and to secure what could be one of the deals of the transfer window if Guehi successfully makes the move to St. James’ Park.

Yet another wrench has been thrown into the works for Newcastle.

Crystal Palace could keep Guehi after Chadi Riad injury

According to the Mirror, Palace could opt to pull the plug on Guehi’s move to Newcastle after defender Chadi Riad was injured last night in the south London side’s League Cup tie against Norwich City.

Having already sold Joachim Andersen to Fulham last week, Palace are already light in the centre-back department, with Oliver Glasner working behind the scenes to bring in a replacement for the Danish international.

Yet with Riad now going down with an injury, Newcastle could be in a difficult position in their bid to sign Guehi, who could now be forced to stay at Selhurst Park if his defensive teammate is out for a considerable amount of time.

Indeed, the transfer window closing on Friday could give Palace almost zero time to bring in a replacement for Andersen as well as a player who could fill in for Riad, and with Guehi in talks to leave, it makes sense why the Eagles could now choose to pull the plug on the defender’s move to Newcastle.

Guehi might have to accept he’s staying at Palace this summer

Guehi is one of the best defenders in the Premier League who this summer showed he is ready for a big step up in his career after playing such a vital role for England at the Euros.

Yet with so many obstacles now in the centre-back’s way in trying to join Newcastle, the former Chelsea academy star might have to accept that he has to remain with Palace for the summer, a fate that might work out heading into 2025.

As we know, Palace are one of the most exciting teams in England under Glasner, and a few more months with the Austrian could help Guehi massively in his development, which in turn could lead to an even bigger move in the January window.
