Newcastle United’s season so far hasn’t gone according to plan.

Newcastle are currently languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table and pressure is starting to mount on Eddie Howe.

The Magpies are winless in their last five league games and it’s become evident that additions are needed in January following a disappointing summer.

With that said, it’s just come to light that Newcastle have held talks about signing a really exciting Brazilian attacker.

Newcastle hold talks to sign William Gomes

According to Globo Esporte, Newcastle have held informal talks with Sao Paulo about their teenage sensation William Gomes.

Gomes’s performances for the Brazillian outfit have put Newcastle on red alert and they have added him to their shortlist ahead of the January transfer window.

It’s understood Sao Paulo could make the 18-year-old their big sale next year and they added a £100m release clause to his new contract back in August.

Gomes, who is considered ‘the new gem of Brazilian football’ per Brazil Scout, has only played 15 senior games, netting twice.

So it’s unlikely Newcastle would pay anywhere close to his release clause.

Gomes statistics compared to Anthony Gordon

If Newcastle were to sign Gomes this winter, he’d likely be competing against Anthony Gordon for a spot in the starting line-up.

Here are how their statistics compare, as per FBref.

Stats per 90William GomesAnthony Gordon
Non-penalty goals0.340.23
Progressive passes2.222.79
Progressive carries4.773.96
Progressive passes received10.067.37

Interestingly, Gomes’ statistics are actually superior to Gordon’s, though, admittedly he’s playing at a lower level.
