Chelsea fans have chanted Roman Abramovich’s name in recent months despite him selling the club to Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022.

Abramovich sold the club after he was sanctioned by the UK government following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The £2.5billion raised from the sale is still frozen in the UK despite being pledged to causes linked to the Ukraine war.

Boehly and Clearlake have faced criticism for their running of the club since the takeover with Chelsea yet to reach the heights they experienced under Abramovich’s ownership.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has shared a new verdict on the Russian billionaire returning to Stamford Bridge in the future.

Boehly has faced fan criticism for his running of Chelsea since the takeover in 2022.

Abramovich will find it ‘very, very hard’ to return to Chelsea

As per the BBC (8 March), Abramovich’s lawyers are insisting the funds should be used for all victims of the war – while the government is keen for the money to go to humanitarian efforts inside Ukraine only.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted the 58-year-old will find it “very hard” to “get his club back”.

He claimed the “spectre of Abramovich is hanging over Chelsea” with a section of the fanbase pining for his return.

Wyness told Football Insider's Inside Track podcast: "There's a lot of conflicting information coming out about this.

"I called up one of my political sources to see where it was at – and the board who managed the Abramovich money have been asking for meetings with politicians for some time.

"It seems strange to go straight to the legal action.

"These Russian assets are a legal minefield, and it's not just the Abramovich assets.

"We'll have to see where it goes in the next few weeks.

"Certainly, the spectre of Abramovich is hanging over Chelsea, wondering if he can get his club back in some way.

"I think it will be very, very hard for him."

Chelsea in pole position to sign Bellingham

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (11 March) that Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund are the front-runners in the race for Jobe Bellingham's signature.

Tottenham and Crystal Palace scouts have also been keeping tabs on the Sunderland star.

The Black Cats will be forced to consider big-money offers if they do not ascend to the Premier League this season.
