Arsenal legend Santi Cazorla took to social media to express his joy at seeing ‘friend’ Mikel Arteta after their 1-0 Premier League win over Ipswich on Friday (December 27).
The 40-year-old watched on as his old team secured all three points to leapfrog London rivals Chelsea and go into second, six points behind Liverpool who have a game in hand.
Ipswich gave the home side an early scare after Sammie Szmodics came within inches of tapping Leif Davis’ deflected cross past David Raya but was ultimately unable to connect.
Kai Havertz was in the right place at the right time to score the decisive goal in the 23rd minute, latching on to Leandro Trossard’s low cross to score into an open net.
Arteta’s side continued to dominate proceedings but were unable to further penetrate Ipswich’s determined defence.
In the end, it didn’t matter, and Arsenal ended an impressive 2024 with all three points against the Premier League new boys.

The ‘little magician’ is still playing, turning out for his hometown side Real Oviedo in the Spanish second division, where he has started 16 of his 19 games across all competitions, scoring one goal, and providing four assists in 1255 minutes of action.
Both Cazorla and Arteta were teammates at Arsenal, winning two FA Cups in their four years together at the Emirates.
The Spanish playmaker took to X, formally known as Twitter, after the win over Ipswich to share an image of the two, saying: “What a joy to see you friend, thanks for everything Mikel Arteta. Crack Arsenal.”
Arsenal fans will have to wait until 2025 before they watch their side play again, with Mikel Arteta’s side traveling across London to face Brentford on January 1st.
The North London club have a tricky run of fixtures in January, including games against Newcastle, Man United, and the derby with arch-rivals Tottenham.
