Liverpool ended up keeping Joe Gomez at the club in the summer despite plenty of interest from Aston Villa, but it doesn’t look as if that’s benefitted the Englishman so far.

Arne Slot has opted to use Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as his preferred pairing at the heart of the defence this season.

Jarell Quansah was in the immediate plans of Slot, but his opening 45-minute cameo against Ipswich Town appears to have knocked him down the pecking order, as he’s not been seen since.

Liverpool decided against signing another centre-back in the summer transfer window, despite Liverpool links to Goncalo Inacio towards the end of the window.

Now, this leaves them with Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Konate, Nathaniel Phillips and Quansah.

However, Gomez has struggled for minutes this season and Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest update on his situation.

Fabrizio Romano issues Joe Gomez transfer update at Liverpool

Crystal Palace and Fulham wanted Joe Gomez back in the summer, but nothing came of it.

Gomez only has 11 minutes to his name which came recently against AC Milan, as Arne Slot looks to chop and change things with a busy schedule.

With the Carabao Cup returning on Wednesday, there could be the perfect opportunity for the Englishman to showcase his talents to Slot.

Interestingly, Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Gomez’s situation at Liverpool when speaking to Caught Offside.

"There are no concrete movements so far for Liverpool's Joe Gomez, despite recent interest.

"Aston Villa didn't sign a centre-back in August due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, and Newcastle wanted Guehi.

"At the moment, it's quiet and the next months will be important to understand how much Slot will use Gomez with rotations in several competitions."

What does Arne Slot think of Joe Gomez?

Joe Gomez, who is valued at £30 million, was praised by Arne Slot for working really hard after returning from the Euros, but we now know Slot can’t have been that impressed as he’s barely been seen.

"It has been in the right place for three weeks. He has worked really hard since he came back.

"He didn't play a lot in the Euros and when he came back in the first sessions he couldn't train the whole session so we had to manage his load and that was also a bit a reason why he wasn't in the team on Saturday.

"But this week he had a good week in terms of load and how much he could do with the team.

"He is one of the players that I see new things from and learn things what I see from him, also combined with other players. It has been a good week for him and us until now.

"At this moment I am expecting everyone to be here. (But) everything can change."
