Arsenal could be facing another season without claiming any silverware as they look set to miss out on the Premier League title.

Mikel Arteta's side secured a 1-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday (16 March), but they remain 12 points behind Liverpool in second place.

Arteta has faced criticism from Arsenal fans, with the Champions League their only remaining realistic chance of claiming a trophy this season.

The north London giants will face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the competition after beating PSV 9-3 on aggregate in the last 16.

Football Insider revealed on 6 March Arsenal's appointment of former Atletico Madrid chief Andrea Berta is all but done.

They have been without a sporting director since Edu's departure from Arsenal in November following five years at the club.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider there could be a decision to make on Arteta's future down the line if he fails to win anything before the end of next season.

The Spaniard has only won one major honour since returning to the club as manager in 2019, having lifted the FA Cup trophy in 2020.

Andrea Berta facing more complicated situation at Arsenal

Borson suggested Arsenal's situation will be more complicated for Berta after working with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone for a long time.

He told Football Insider: "I think it’s going to be a great hire, isn’t it?

"He’s one of the best around. Atletico have been over the last 10 years one of the best-run clubs.

"I guess a lot of Atletico’s success has been related to stability at the top and Simeone.

"Maybe if you were being slightly cautious on it, maybe they do have an issue coming down the line on Arteta if you fail.

"If he fails to win something this season and fails to win something next season, then probably that’s going to be a bit of a decision to make.

"It's a more complicated situation than he’s probably dealt with at Atletico, where he’s had one manager for a very long time and that is a massive advantage in terms of stability and building a squad."

Arsenal have opened preliminary Lautaro Martinez talks

Football Insider revealed on 7 March Arsenal have opened preliminary Lautaro Martinez talks as they look to add to their attacking options in the summer transfer window.

Berta is a big admirer of the 27-year-old, having previously tried to sign him from Inter Milan while he was in charge of recruitment at Atletico Madrid.

Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, who are both out for the remainder of this season through injury, have led the line for Arteta's side over the past couple of campaigns, but the club are targeting an upgrade this summer.
