'That's what we need': Virgil van Dijk sends message to Darwin Nunez after his Liverpool double at Brentford
Today at 12:15 PM
Liverpool scored twice late on to win at Brentford and Virgil van Dijk has offered up his immediate thoughts on match-winner Darwin Nunez.
Nunez came off the bench to score a double to seal a big three points and send Liverpool seven points clear at the top.
Nunez has had a frustrating time of things this season but when Arne Slot needed him, he came up trumps with two crucial finishes.
And speaking about Nunez, his captain, Virgil van Dijk, has sent a clear message to the Uruguayan.
What Virgil van Dijk said about Darwin Nunez after his double at Brentford
Speaking to the media immediately after the game, Van Dijk spoke about both the win and Nunez and had some nice words for the striker.
“Very good. I think a well-deserved victory. Clean sheet. Tough place to come and onto the next. Every win is a big result, especially when the teams around us are very strong.
“We have to stay consistent, win games, and perform well.
Adding specific comments on goal scorer Nunez, Van Dijk praised the striker and admitted they needed everyone contributing to be successful.
“You have to earn these things and as a striker you get judged on goals. Today he put his mark on the game with the two goals. That's what we need – we need everyone at their best, contributing to success, and today it was his day.”
Liverpool bench reaction shows they love Darwin Nunez
Van Dijk is right in his praise for Darwin Nunez here but he is also obviously sending a message to the striker that not only does he need to be ready to contribute, but also maybe deliver more often.
Van Dijk is a pillar of consistency at Liverpool and it will frustrate him to see a player like Darwin Nunez be so inconsistent in his own right.
Still, the Liverpool bench’s reaction to Nunez’s goal says a lot about his popularity at the club and Arne Slot will be hoping this is two of many in the coming months.
