Liverpool didn’t make much noise in the summer transfer market, but when they did, it made people stand up and take notice.

With Michael Edwards returning to Liverpool, the Anfield faithful know what he is about and how he likes to operate in the market.

Therefore, it wasn’t a surprise that, with pre-season underway and August approaching, Liverpool hadn’t made a signing yet.

That is despite Arne Slot replacing Jurgen Klopp and fans expecting him to be backed in the transfer market so he can add his touches to the team.

In the end, Liverpool only signed two players Federico Chiesa joined from Juventus and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, who was loaned back.

The Chiesa deal stood out because Liverpool only paid £10 million for a player who was once deemed one of the best talents in Italy and a Euro 2020 winner.

Fans have seen a glimpse of the versatile forward, but injuries have meant that he isn’t 100% yet, so they will be hoping that changes in the coming months.

Gianfranco Zola would have seen Chiesa shine in Juve colours, then fall off slightly, before making his move to Anfield.

The Chelsea legend spoke about the strong competition he has at Liverpool and how he will ‘certainly improve’, as he told Hayters TV.

"Yes, (a good opportunity for Chiesa to get back into Italy set-up)," said Zola. "Playing in the Premier League is an opportunity for everyone, I can tell you by experience.

"Playing right now, with the type of football and the quality of football that you have here. It can only be a benefit. It will push Chiesa hard.

"Also, they (Liverpool) have a few strikers over there," laughed Zola. "The point is that they have a lot of competition, but he will have his time and space. It will be down to him to use that time wisely. But he will certainly improve his position."

Liverpool sitting top of the Premier League table

Slot has made an outstanding start at Liverpool and fans are starting to believe that they can do the unthinkable.

Given that Slot had just come in, many were just focusing on winning a domestic trophy and then maintaining their Champions League status.
