Jamie Carragher believes that what Djed Spence did right in front of Ange Postecoglou was ‘unbelievable’ as the former Liverpool man ripped into the 24-year-old.
Tottenham Hotspur were humiliated at home by Liverpool as the away side won 6-3 in North London. The Reds stormed into a 3-1 lead before half-time and added three more in the second half, as they scored over three for just the first time this season.
The Lilywhites had given themselves hope as James Maddison made it 2-1 and they looked set to go into the break somehow within touching distance of the Reds. However, one direct ball over the top saw Arne Slot’s team rip through Spurs and extend their lead back to two goals, with Spence nowhere to be seen.
Djed Spence’s role in Liverpool’s third goal
Djed Spence made the rash decision to chase down Trent Alexander-Arnold in Liverpool’s half, leaving Tottenham’s left side exposed. Alexander-Arnold played a long ball over the top and following Dominik Szoboszlai’s knock-on, Liverpool found themselves in a three versus two situation.
Mohamed Salah and Szoboszlai took full advantage of Tottenham’s back line being in total disarray as he the Eypgtian just fed the ball into the path of Szoboszlai who poked it past Fraser Forster. Carragher couldn’t believe Spence’s decision to press so high and leave Spurs short in defence.
Spence had just been starting to play well, however, his error against the Merseyside club and overall display won’t have done him any favours.
Jamie Carragher slams Djed Spence for Liverpool’s third goal
Jamie Carragher has slammed Spence’s involvement in Liverpool’s third goal and cannot believe how exposed he left Tottenham’s back-line. The Sky Sports pundit claimed the 24-year-old needed to use his brain and realise it was not a good idea to press so high against Liverpool just moments before half-time.
Carragher said on Sky Sports: “Look at your left back going to press, you don’t do that! You stay at left-back, Archie Gray gets dragged across, Dragusin’s in no man’s land and before you know it, it’s three versus two. That doesn’t mean don’t be attacking like the manager says, it means use your brain.”
When asked whether he thought it was the manager who had told him to press like that, the former Liverpool man responded: “He shouldn’t be because if anyone’s going to score another goal, it’s Liverpool. You need to make sure you get in at half-time at 2-1 and go from there.
“Don’t forget it’s on the side of the manager. For me, that decision from the left back, you could say he’s just made the decision, but if your manager has been there for 18 months, those messages must be getting passed on every single day.
“He’s never getting there, he’s gone about 40 yards, he leaves an 18-year-old kid at the back, you’ve got to look after a kid – he’s not even a centre-back and he’s 18. If you do that a minute before half-time is absolutely unbelievable.”
