Virgil van Dijk took to Instagram to post a message to fans after Liverpool dropped points at Anfield.

Liverpool and Manchester United played out a classically nervy and frenetic 2-2 draw on Sunday (5 January).

The Reds’ defence was uncharacteristically sloppy during the game, giving up two easy goals in the process and almost losing the game, had Harry Maguire been a little more composed in front of goal.

Captain Van Dijk also had a moment when he covered for an out-of-position Trent Alexander-Arnold that caught attention.

Once the ball was out of play, Van Dijk seemed to glare at the right-back for his poor work rate in getting back into position.

Posting on Instagram the Dutchman wrote: “Together, as always! On to the next..”

Liverpool contract situations could be causing resentment

Football Insider opinion

The Reds currently find themselves in the unenviable position of being the most scrutinised team in England right now, and not just because they are top of the table.

Mohamed Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk are all out of contract in the summer and all three players have been linked with a move away.

Virgil van Dijk has been a key piece in the Liverpool title charge.

England international Alexander-Arnold is the odd one out of the trio, having said nothing publicly about his desire to stay and former Celtic man Van Dijk’s body language may have shown how he feels about the situation.

Alexander-Arnold has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer, while Salah has suggested this could be his last year on Merseyside as a new deal is still not agreed, and posted a cryptic message online after the United clash.

Despite the lack of clarity over the squad Arne Slot has managed to pull away from the pack in the Premier League, although Paul Merson is sick of the praise being directed at the Anfield stars for continuing to perform at a high level despite the contract situations.

In other news, Simon Jordan had this to say about Liverpool fans.
