Tottenham Hotspur were one of the biggest spenders in the summer transfer window.

Indeed, Spurs spent over £100m acquiring the services of Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert and Archie Gray.

Solanke was the single biggest signing of the summer in the Premier League, but, Tottenham did look at signing alternative options.

Indeed, speaking in his pre-match press conference, Ange Postecoglou has now admitted that Tottenham did look at signing Ivan Toney in the summer before his move to Al-Ahli.

Tottenham were linked with Toney during the window, and now, the Spurs manager has confirmed that those links were genuine.

Tottenham looked at Ivan Toney

Postecoglou admitted that Spurs looked at signing the 'world class' striker.

“We looked at him (Toney) but the reality was that Dom is the one that I wanted. It took the whole summer to get him in but he was the one that fitted the profile that we wanted," Postecoglou said.

Ivan Toney would've been a better signing than Dominic Solanke

Postecoglou says that he wanted Solanke rather than Toney, but there's a strong argument to make that Toney would've been the better signing.

Yes, Solanke did score more goals last season, but Toney has been scoring in the Premier League for a lot longer than Solanke.

Toney was picked for England ahead of Solanke in this summer's Euros for a reason, and as he eventually moved for £40m to Al Ahli, he would've been cheaper than Solanke in any case.

Solanke hasn't had the brightest of starts to life at Tottenham, failing to score so far for Spurs, but, of course, it's still very early days.

Solanke could prove to be a fantastic addition to this Spurs team, but when you look at both players' records and the respective pricetags, there is an argument to make that Toney would've been a better buy than Solanke this summer.
