Lucas Digne has taken to social media after the Aston Villa full-back was on the wrong side of France’s 2-0 defeat to Croatia.

Despite having the in-form trio of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Demeble and Randal Kolo Muani up front, Didier Deschamps’ side were rocked after Andrej Kramaric missed an early penalty after eight minutes.

Ante Budimir made up for the spot-kick miss, heading home Ivan Perisic’s cross, the player who turned assister to goalscorer to put Croatia two goals ahead in Split.

Digne had a relatively bright performance for France, but having been unable to keep Perisic quiet on Thursday 20 March, the 31-year-old trudged off the pitch frustrated at full-time.

Taking to Instagram [20 March], Digne wrote: “Frustrating evening but battle still on Sunday,” with a flexed muscle and France flag emojis.

Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram and Ezri Konsa were joined by Arsenal’s William Saliba and Gabby Agbonlahor in liking the post following France’s surprise.

Unai Emery needs Aston Villa stars back fully fit and firing

Football Insider verdict

Unai Emery will be desperate for his stars to return to Villa Park in one piece, but knowing that Digne plays with his heart on his sleeve, the defender will put even more effort into his next display.

Marcus Rashford, who has become a fan favourite at Villa, is on international duty with England for the first time in a year, finally breaking free from the shackles of Man United.

With Champions League qualification already on the line, the Villans have a chance of lifting silverware this season by defying the odds to win the European competition or lift the FA Cup.

The manager’s achievements this term have not gone unnoticed, with Emery being linked with a shock Man United move to replace Ruben Amorim, which would leave Villa fans distraught.

Villa are still competing in all of these competitions, and with so many of Emery’s players on international duty during the two-week break, he will be covering his eyes until club football resumes.
