Could there finally be a little bit more long-term security for a player who has potentially been on the way out the last two years?
For a player who has very much had an uncertain future at Juventus the last couple of summers, midfielder Weston McKennie just has a knack for very much flipping his status at the club within a few short months. It was true last season, and it is proving to be the case during the 2024-25 campaign under Thiago Motta.
Once McKennie returned to the squad after a summer of potential moves away from Turin, the 26-year-old American signed a one-year contract extension in late-August to ensure that he wouldn't be playing on an expiring deal this season.
Four months later, a longer contract could very well be in order.
According to a Christmas Eve report from Turin-based sports paper Tuttosport, Juventus and McKennie's camp have opened talks over a second contract extension during the current season. The new contract would run through 2029, potentially giving some long-term security to a player who has very much been looked at as an asset on the transfer market the last couple of summers. While how long the length of the contract is included in Tuttosport's report, there's no word on what a potential salary may be for McKennie, who currently makes in the neighborhood of €2.5 million net a season.

This past summer, McKennie was thought to be one of the main players going the other way as part of the Douglas Luiz swap deal with Aston Villa, but his portion of the deal reportedly fell apart due to wage demands. Other moves were rumored, but never happened. That comes after a summer window in 2023 in which McKennie was on the market only to be brought back in by Max Allegri right before Juventus went on their preseason tour in the United States.
Both times, as we've come to learn, McKennie's reintroduction back into the squad has resulted in him proving once again that he is certainly a useful — and versatile — piece for a Juventus squad that has undergone plenty of change over the last six months.
Or, as Tuttosport says, "a McKennie like this can still be useful for a long time to come."
In total, McKennie has appeared in 17 games and made 11 starts in all competitions, scoring four goals and adding two assists. A season after he set a career-high with 10 assists in all competitions, he is just two goals shy of tying his career-best total of six that he recorded during his first season with Juventus during the 2020-21 campaign under Andrea Pirlo.
