30-year-old still without a new club after summer Wrexham release

Wrexham made decisions to sanction a number of exits in the summer with left-back Callum McFadzean among those to depart.

Wrexham won a second consecutive promotion at the end of last season, rising from League Two to League One as one of three sides to go up automatically.

Phil Parkinson has retained faith in much of the group that has led the Red Dragons from the National League to this point. However, there have been improvements to the squad made year-on-year, and that was especially the case in the summer transfer window just gone.

As such, a number of those on the fringes at the Racecourse Ground found themselves heading elsewhere. Some loans were sanctioned but the majority of exits came as out of contract players were released.

Among those let go by Wrexham was left-back Callum McFadzean, who had been onboard since January 2022.

McFadzean’s North Wales stint

Waterthorpe-born McFadzean made the move to Wrexham from Crewe Alexandra, where he had played 15 times in half a season before being snapped up.

He would play his part in the promotion from the National League, playing 31 times across all competitions. He was Parkinson’s go-to man on the left until February, when he dropped out of the side injured and struggled to break back into the fold amid Jacob Mendy’s emergence.

Injury problems persisted last year and McFadzean had to wait until January for his first League Two match day squad involvement. His first league outing would come in March, but he only appeared once more in the league before his summer release.

Parkinson backed McFadzean to find joy elsewhere having recovered from his injuries when entering free agency. However, things haven’t gone quite as hoped just yet.

On the lookout

McFadzean, as it stands, remains without a club after leaving Wrexham.

There are still routes for him to return to the game soon though. The need for free agent additions pop up due to injuries and the former Sunderland man will be hoping to take such a chance when it arises.

Recent years have been challenging but the left-back could prove a shrewd signing on a free. He can operate as a full-back or wing-back and has filled in as a left-sided centre-back when required too.

His experience in League One and League Two would make him a smart pickup for a fourth tier side in need of another option on the left.

After his role in Wrexham’s promotion, McFadzean’s experience will be welcomed wherever he hangs his cap next.
