Stoke City paid compensation to bring Dean Whitehead in from Barnsley with Darrell Clarke admitting the coach ‘couldn’t turn down’ the move.

Stoke City shocked many when they announced the departure of Steven Schumacher earlier this week.

The Potters have had a fairly indifferent start to the season, but they were neither overachieving or falling short of expectations. Having only hired Schumacher nine months ago, his position at the Bet365 Stadium seemed a secure one.

However, with the club opting for a change in direction, the decision was made to relieve him of his duties. A consolation of the surprise move is that the Championship side have wasted no time in naming their replacement.

Stoke City have brought in Narcis Pelach as their new boss. He was serving as first-team coach for Norwich City, with Paul Clements following him over to Staffordshire while Dean Whitehead has also joined the backroom team.

42-year-old Whitehead had become assistant manager at Barnsley, and boss Darrell Clarke has now opened up on the exit of his no. 2.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Clarke admitted that it was a move Whitehead ‘couldn’t turn down’. Despite the blow of losing him, the Tykes have landed compensation and will likely see player-coach Conor Hourihane’s responsibilities in the dugout increase.

“Dean is a great lad, but I also understand that Stoke is his club and he spent a lot of time there and it’s an opportunity he couldn’t turn down.

“The club gets compensated and I’ve got a good backroom team.”
